interest-based supports

what are interest-based supports?
Interest-based supports focus on using a person's interests to provide opportunities for learning and development.
why are interest-based supports effective?
Many children and adolescents have specific interests - favourite music artists, sports or games - that they know lots about. Neurodivergent children seek interests even more so, learning extensive information about their interests. By incorporating their interests in supports, they are able to share their knowledge, see a purpose to their learning and increase engagement in therapy.
what are some examples of interest-based supports?
Common interests seen in our neurodivergent kids are Pokemon, Minecraft, Frozen, animals and monster trucks. In one to one supports, this can include specific reading passages or use of games based on characters. In small group supports, games or topics can be introduced as part of the support that focus on a child's interest areas.
